  3GPP standard refers to the development of the third generation Mobile communication standard - UMTSUniversul Mobile Telephone System (UMTSUniversul Mobile Telephone System) based on GSMMAP core network and WCDMA wireless interface. It is also responsible for defining protocols compatible with the ANSl-41 core network on wireless interfaces.   Regional standardization organizations participating in 3GPP include: ARIB (Japan), ETSI (Europe), TTA (Korea), TTC (Japan), T1P1 (USA). Participants agree to jointly for UTRA (UniversalTerrestrialRadioAccess, common ground wireless access) standardization efforts. Equipment manufacturers and operators participate in 3GPP standardization by participating in these regional standardization organizations.   3GPP developed the standard specification to Release as the version management, the average one to two years will complete the development of a version, from the establishment of the beginning of R99, then to R4, and now has developed to R16.

  As the world's largest and most important international communications standards organization, 3GPP has played an important role in the development of 5G technical standards and the promotion of 5G commercialization.

  R15 is the first version of the 5G standard, which was frozen in September 2018. It is the basic version widely adopted by global operators for 5G network construction. It defines two stages: non-independent networking (NSA) and independent networking (SA), and supports enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and some ultra-reliable low-delay communication (uRLLC). Meet the market's most urgent application needs.

  In July 2020, the second enhanced version of 3GPP for 5G standard R16 was officially released, the R16 standard improved the basic capabilities of the R15 standard, and supported the full service scenario of eMBB, uRLLC, and Massive machine communication (mMTC) of the three major 5G application scenarios defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). And especially for the vertical industry needs to carry out a large number of capacity expansion. [3]

  In late March 2022, the third version of the global 5G standard, 3GPP R17, completed the functional freezing of the third stage (that is, the completion of the system design). In December 2019, the 3GPP approved the study scope for Release 17. Despite the impact of the epidemic, 3GPP has been working through online collaboration since late January 2020, but most of the scheduled projects for Release 17 have been completed. The completion of Release 17 not only marks the successful conclusion of the first phase of 5G technology evolution, but also proves that the mobile ecosystem is resilient and committed to driving 5G forward.
